Cristian Hernandez-Blick is a researcher, writer, and visual artist.
He holds a BFA in Critical and Cultural Practices from Emily Carr University of Art + Design and an
MA in Science and Technology Studies from the University of British Columbia.
His
graduate research explored historical and philosophical dimensions of teleology as they relate to
debates over the metaphysics and epistemology of life and machines in biology and cybernetics.
Cristian currently serves as the Head of Program for
Interspecies Internet,
an organization working to promote and advance the study of nonhuman animal communication, intelligence, ethics, and welfare.
He works periodically as a seminar instructor at Emily Carr University, occasionally creates
abstract digital illustrations, dabbles in
front-end web design, and previously co-founded a small, experimental, alt-comics press named
DDOOGG.
His current research interests include historical and philosophical perspectives on teleology,
purposiveness, agency, autonomy, communication, intelligence, psychology, and sentience in biological systems.
